PREDICTABLY, our spies and authoritarian politicians (including Julian Brazier in his article of January 21) have used the Paris terror attacks as an excuse to extend governmental powers to intrude into our lives. Mr Brazier calls for support for the Counter Therorism and Security Bill, which has been amended to include the “snoopers’ charter”. This would force telecoms companies and internet providers to store all our communications so that they can be searched by government agencies. We know from the Snowden leaks and other scandals that it is not a good idea to give governments such powers, as they are likely to abuse them. The right response to terrorists is to defend our freedoms, not to give them up to a secretive security state.
