Sign up to help save our libraries

Lib Dem county councillor Martin Vye (Concern For The County’s Libraries, Letters and Opinion, Gazette, March 19) voiced his concerns about Kent County Council’s proposal to hand over the running of all 99 of Kent’s libraries to a trust. Rightly, he notes that the consultation document fails to address whether the trust will have any obligation to keep the library services we currently enjoy. Worryingly, Cllr Mike Hill (Con), the councillor in charge, says that it will be up to the trust to decide whether to maintain the libraries. Thousands of Kent residents have now signed either the paper or online petition to register their desire to protect the county’s libraries. Residents have pitched in, spending time in Canterbury, Whitstable, Herne Bay and Sandwich, getting locals to sign up to the cause. If the petition gets enough signatures, this will force councillors to seriously debate the future of our libraries. However, time is now running out. If you live, work or study in Kent, and you want to let our politicians to know you care about our wonderful local libraries, make sure you add your name to the petition total at http://tinyurl.com/kentlibs
