Recognition for dance school’s high standards

Safety and training rewarded with official accreditation

A DANCE school has been recognised for its high standards of training. Hasland Dance Studios in Kings Road, Herne Bay, was awarded Recognised School Status by the Council for Dance Education and is one of only three schools in Kent to achieve the status. It is awarded to schools that meet strict criteria, including police checks on all staff and using only qualified teachers. Principal Anna Greenhalgh said she was delighted at the news. She said:

“Our aim is to offer the best standards of dance training within an environment where we take the children’s safety and wellbeing seriously. I’m absolutely thrilled that this has been recognised and it is a brilliant achievement for us.”

Dance schools are not regulated, but the status makes it easier for parents to choose those who use teachers with qualifications from the RAD, ISTD, IDTA or other dance examination boards. Accredited schools are also committed to allowing staff to follow programmes for continual professional development. Anna added:

“There is no regulation or legality to stop an unqualified teacher starting their own dance school and I see it happening all the time. Parents understandably do not necessarily know the difference, and many assume that the same standards and legislation apply to dance schools as they do mainstream schools or nurseries, but this is not the case.”

Crucial

“Teachers who hold qualifications with the dance exam boards have to adhere to codes of conduct which ensure they are qualified, insured and police-checked in order to teach. This is so crucial for children’s safety. It does mean more expense but it is important to be able to prove we have the highest professional standards.”

The school started in Herne Bay in 1942 and is continuing to expand. New classes this year include dedicated sessions for boys only.
