A new sign welcoming visitors to Herne Bay features a character from a children’s book written by a local author.

Nippy the Crab is seen writing the letters with a novelty pen that looks like Herne Bay Clock Tower.

It is based on Tales of the Clock Tower, written by Faye Beerling, to raise awareness of the history of the tower.

She was asked to write the book by the Friends of Herne Bay Clock Tower as part of their campaign to restore the structure.

A proportion of the money made from book sales will go towards the work.

Ms Beerling was presented with the sign by Julian Jennings, the chairman of the Friends of the Clock Tower and Margaret Burns from Herne Bay in Bloom.

She said: “We’re all putting money back in to the pot and enjoying a really good book.

“For me, it’s like, oh my gosh. It’s one thing to be an author to go publish but all these other things as well. Like I’m living someone else’s life. I’ve been working so hard for this. It’s brilliant.”
