Local votes must be cast on local issues

MY THOUGHTS are turning to the elections in spring, both national and, probably more importantly, local. Many have moaned about the running of Canterbury City Council and the high-handed attitude it has often adopted, but as a concerned local voter who should I vote for? It is very important to separate the locals and nationals. It is no point electing local councillors just because you are for or against Roger Gale’s party’s national agenda. What I need to see is a local manifesto that can improve the coastal towns and district as a whole — maybe then I can see something to get behind and vote for. All I know is if the local elections are fought on the national issues then it will be the people of Canterbury district that will come out the poorer.
