Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate Russ Timpson has called for a “Team Thanet” approach to reopening and operating Manston airport.
Mr Timpson held a meeting on the airport’s future in Broadstairs today (Tuesday), where speakers included Lib Dem MP for St Austell and Newquay, Stephen Gilbert.
Mr Glibert told the meeting local authorities, MPs and the Local Enterprise Partnership had “pulled together” to convince the government of Newquay airport’s importance. He said:
“The airport at Newquay could have gone wrong a dozen times, so based on our experiences in Cornwall, my advice to you would be to never give up”.
Newquay airport attracted more than 174,000 passengers in 2013, a five per cent rise on the previous year. Mr Timpson, who will stand in the South Thanet constituency in May’s General Election, said he believed there are: “great aviation opportunities for Manston”, despite its closure.
Other speakers at the meeting included Sue Girdler of flight school TG Aviation, which was forced to relocate by the closure of the airport and Lib Dem North Thanet candidate George Cunningham.
