This year’s Herne Bay Festival will have a Victorian flavour. The public had been asked to vote on what theme the event should take and 43% went Victorian.
The vote began with a request on Facebook for people’s ideas, from which a steering group drew up a short-list. This was sent circulated through Facebook and Twitter, with the Victorian concept the clear winner. It was followed by Wish You Were Here, with 32 per cent of the votes, and Herne Bay Through the Ages, with 20 per cent.
Festival organiser Alex Mahoney said:
“We are really trying to make it the people’s festival this year by getting everyone involved.”
Herne Bay will be celebrated as a blooming Victorian seaside resort, with a range of events to highlight its rich heritage. And there will be a real feel for the traditional seaside, with candy floss, donkeys, music hail, crabbing, Punch and Judy and sandcastles. This year’s festival, organised by the company Continental Drifts, will run from Saturday to Sunday, August 22 to 30. Aisha Francis, from Continental Drifts, said:
“Plans for the festival are already under way and we are very excited to start working on it. A huge thank-you to everyone who voted for this year’s theme. As plans are getting under way we are now looking to get the programme together and are inviting local people and community groups and organisations to run their own events as part of the overall festival programme. But, as many of you know, it’s the community that really make the festival happen.
We are excited to celebrate Herne Bay in its heyday as a popular seaside resort. It would be fabulous if you could incorporate this theme into your event, but it is entirely up to you. Many of you ran events as part of the festival last year and it would be great to have you back again.”
If you are interested in running an event as part of the festival, you will be provided with free advertising on the website and in the programme and, if your event requires it, a free booking system.
The key events and dates for this year will be:
- Saturday, August 22: Lantern parade and bandstand programme to be confirmed;
- Wednesday 26: Swing Band Night at the bandstand;
- Thursday 27: Sandcastle competition;
- Friday 28: Full day of bandstand;
- Saturday 29: alfresco ballroom, Herne Bay’s Got Talent, music stage and fireworks.
