THE centre of Canterbury is the area’s crime capital, according to Home Office statistics.

The latest figures, which relate to December last year, chart the number of crimes reported in each local-authority ward.

And Canterbury’s Westgate ward, which includes much of the city-centre area such as High Street and Burgate with its busy night-time economy, came out way in top in our area with a total of 295 crimes reported during the month.

The next worst-affected ward was Heron in Herne Bay, which includes the lively areas of Central Parade, King’s Road and High Street, 96.

In Whitstable, there were 49 reported crimes in Harbour ward, while in Faversham the figure of 42 gave St Ann’s the highest total in the town.

While Canterbury had the ward with the most crimes, it also had the one with the fewest, Sturry South, which includes the southern fringe of Sturry and stretches out towards Fordwich, recorded just nine.
