Part of Sea Street, Herne Bay, was closed yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) after a 3ft long hole opened in the middle of the road. A section of the busy road near the Jewson building yard was cordoned off while highways engineers worked to fix it. Kent Highways staff were called at about 4pm to reports of “a partial collapse” in the road. Police were also on the scene and traffic cones were placed around the crater. Senior highways steward Gary Gibbs said engineers were investigating the possibility of a water leak, and South East Water had been informed. The hole is about 80cm deep and 40cm wide, but as much as four metres of the road will need to be repaired. A diversion was put in place yesterday evening.
