Karaoke singers are planning to recreate the former Christmas number one Do They Know It’s Christmas? They are planning a one-off performance at an open mic night at the Heron pub on Monday, from 7.30pm.
What began as a joke on Facebook by fortnightly open-mic organiser David Shepherd, has taken on a life of its own as the “super-group” grows. David said:
As this is the last event before Christmas I thought we’d bring some mince pies and Christmas crackers and have a little party. I suggested performers might want to throw in a Christmas song and someone suggested Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas.
Before I knew it, everyone was volunteering to sing individual lines originally performed by the likes of Bono, Sting, George Michael, Paul Young, Boy George and Simon Le Bon! The great thing is that anyone else can join in the chorus. It will be a really nice way to close the show.”
There will also be a chance to sing other festive anthems. Local duo Spyplane are rumoured to be performing The Pogues’ Fairytale of New York. David said:
“Anyone who has seen Spyplane will know their guitarist Karl could not be more different from Pogues’ singer Shane McGowan. I can’t wait to hear it.”
The night is free. For details e-mail David at firstname.lastname@example.org.
