I feel I must respond to Ukip parliamentary candidate Pier Wauchope’s comments regarding Herne Bay MP Sir Roger Gale at his recent meeting in the Kings Hall. Sir Roger has been consistent over a long period of time in his support for a referendum on our membership of the European Union in his ongoing fight for better road and rail connections and for Manston airport and he has equally consistently backed proper immigration controls. Those who know Sir Roger, which must be most of us who actually live in Herne Bay, will not be surprised that he wishes to have nothing to do with the thinly-veiled racism demonstrated by one political party. His brand of politics has always sought to combine patriotism with compassion. The very many people that Sir Roger, backed by his wife Suzy, who had strong childhood connections with Herne Bay, has helped over the years know that
he is a MP who goes the extra mile and is always there when he is needed regardless of their political persuasion. None of us should be too old to listen and to learn but I do not think that the man who the town regards as “our MP” should take too many lessons from either a political candidate parachuted in to fight an election for Ukip or from a retired vicar who lives in Ramsgate. This household, and I hope a majority, will be voting for a person we know we can trust.
