THE president of Whitstable Rotary Club has raised about £600 for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance Trust.
David Cavell, a retired former London policeman and cabbie, completed a 2km swim dressed as a merman at the Whitstable Swimming Pool last Wednesday. The 71-year-old finished the swim in one hour which, considering he could only use his arms, was some achievement.
Mr Cavell was accompanied by fellow Rotarians Ted Rooney, who also swam 2km, Mike Bantin and Piroska Cavell, as well as his granddaughter Sascha. He said:
The merman costume was made by my wife Martha and was very realistic. However, I am not sure that it aided my swimming, as by the end of the event I was pretty tired. The RNLI, Whitstable Pool’s chosen charity, will also receive £50.
