Manston airport to close this week

HOPES of keeping Manston airport open were dealt a fatal blow last Tuesday with the announcement it will shut on Thursday this week. Despite receiving an offer of £5 million from American firm RiverOak Investment, shareholders said the decision had been made to close it. In a statement a spokesman for Manston Airport said:

“Following a meeting with staff, I can confirm the collective consultation has failed to identify a viable alternative that would allow the airport to remain open. Proposals put forward by staff were carefully considered by the management and owners but these proposals would still have required ongoing substantial losses be subsidised and therefore were not viable. In the absence of other options, the decision has been taken to close the airport on May 15. Individual consultation will now take place with all staff members who will be supported through this process. This has been a very difficult time for everyone who works at the airport and we would like to thank all staff for their professionalism.”

The spokesman said the offer made by RiverOak had been rejected for reasons “including the fact that some of those associated with the offer have approached the shareholders previously and have consistently failed to substantiate their proposals.” Herne Bay MP Sir Roger Gale called the decision to close the airport an act of “corporate vandalism.”
