THE Thales radar at Manston has stopped working.

The STAR 2000 equipment, which provides feed to the MoD through a top “bar” which rotates around, sending out radar pulses, and capturing the returned pulses,

is not owned by the MOD.

The MOD did pay for a data feed from the radar into the MOD Airfield Radar Integration Project until the end of December 2014 when it was concluded that this was no longer required.

Campaigners fear the equipment could be sold with rumours that a Newcastle airfield may be interested although this has not been confirmed.

It would cost in the region of £2.5million for a replacement, plus about 18months for calibration.
