Litter shame on our streets

2015-03-16-214622Almost 90 tons of litter is picked up off the streets and parks in the Canterbury district every month. It lands the city council with an annual bill of £1.5m and takes 10,000 man hours to clean up.

The alarming statistics were illustrated this week in the city centre with a huge pile of rubbish collected over just one weekend in the district. The aim of the dirty display was to drive home the anti-litter message and why the council has now introduced tough new enforcement on the streets. Queries about rubbish collections and recycling were also answered, and litter wardens were on hand to talk about enforcement.
