Police chase in town centre

HERNE BAY: Police officers and a have-a-go hero chased a suspected shoplifter through the town centre on Wednesday. Police were alerted by a member of staff in Carphone Warehouse in Mortmier Street, at about 9.20am and witnesses said a man was spotted running from the shop. He was chased by a man nearby until police joined in on foot and in a patrol car. A police spokesman said two phones were reported as stolen and investigations were continuing.

Park attack

HERNE BAY: A man has been remanded in custody accused of attempted rape and wounding after an incident in Herne Bay’s Memorial Park. Alan Cornelius, 49, was arrested after a woman reported being sexually assaulted in the park near Dering Road last Wednesday. He will appear at Canterbury Crown Court on July 7 for a plea and case management hearing.
