On March 17, the speaker was Philip Johnson of Johnson’s Sweet Peas, who gave an informative and interesting talk and slide show on How to Grow and Show Sweet Peas. The Latin name for sweet peas is Lathyrus Odoratus, which means the scent which is so strong. Sweet peas are one of the most popular annual flowers, which are especially prized for their colour and wonderful scents. They are an annual climbing plant that, depending on the variety, can grow from a dwarf size up to two metres high, and many more sizes in between.

Philip took members through the growing process. The best time to plant them is between October and November in cold frames, especially for those who want to show them. He talked about the various stages of cutting, training, feeding and selecting, whether you wanted to show them or just have them at home for their beauty and scent. The slides were also helpful and showed how to achieve the various stages, ending with some slides of past show entries, the variety of colours and sizes.

The next meeting is on Tuesday, March 17, which is the Spring Show. Doors open at 7.15 for staging and judging will take place at 7.45pm. A Nosh and Knowledge evening has been arranged for April 18 and on April 21 there is an open evening with Steve Bradley, who is one of the presenters on the Radio Kent Gardening programme Your Gardening Questions Answered, where he will be taking questions from the audience. Doors open at 7pm at the Institute Hall (address below). Tickets £3.50 are available from Sue Forrester on 07729 255839.
