Gunpowder works owned by Huguenots

PAUL Wilkinson asked “Would our gunpowder have been used to blow up a king?” (Way We Were, November 19). He then gave some details of the gunpowder works here. What he didn’t tell us is that the works were owned by Huguenots – the Gruebers and the Pigous. Given our present discussion about immigration, I should also add that the major ingredient of gunpowder is saltpetre and that this was imported from India. Thus we have also to thank the Indians who mined this and the underpaid Indian crew of many of the ships coming here from India.
