Courts can help to clear litter

Litter at the roadside of the A2 near the Wincheap junction
Litter at the roadside of the A2 near the Wincheap junction

I am appalled by the volume of roadside litter deposited by mindless people and HGV drivers in particular. I daily use the A2 London/Dover Road and have to view the disgusting volume of roadside litter. What a dreadful example to set before those drivers entering/leaving the UK via the Channel ports and rail terminals. Over the past week or so at both parliamentary and local authority level, comment has been made concerning the high cost of litter clearance and its detrimental effect on the UK image. I propose that court officials, in conjunction with local authorities, should be empowered to direct any person sentenced to a term of community service to undertake a supervised period of litter clearance. This will provide a cheap method of litter clearance and enable our police to play an active role in cracking down on convicted offenders.
