ON THURSDAY, for the first time, I attended a council meeting. I hope it will be the last. What depressed me was not only the predictable voting but also the poor quality of so-called debate. With a few notable exceptions, councillors on both sides of the chamber wasted inordinate amounts of time abusing each other and arguing about who said what when. When will they learn that the people they claim to represent are not interested in personal defamation, party squabbles and political point-scoring. What we look for is serious discussion of the hugely difficult issues which face us, and a willingness to explore different ways of making necessary cuts which take proper account of public consultation. As rate-payers we deserve better from our elected representatives.
