Event organisers have appealed for help to bring a historic aircraft to the skies above Herne Bay this summer. The Bay Promo Team are organising this year’s air show and want to bring the Gloster Meteor to the town to dazzle the crowds. The Meteor fighter appeared in the skies 70 years ago and propelled Britain into the jet age. An airworthy jet has been tracked down by Jane Priston, from the Amy Johnson in Herne Bay project, and now the team hopes it can secure it for the air show on August 15. Team spokesman Gerald McCarthy said the team needs to raise £5,000 from donations and sponsorship to help make it happen. He said:

“We are confident we can raise the money. Money from advance ticket sales for the Sci-Fi event have raised extra funding that we need. It’s looking positive, but more donations and sponsorship would certainly help. I think having the Gloster Meteor would be a fantastic opportunity to bring back a bit of history from 70 years ago this summer. It would be flying over similar skies to when it first flew, and I think it would attract airplane enthusiasts from all over, and will be a big highlight.”

Mr McCarthy said the main attraction could be the Red Arrows and hopes to hear whether the application to bring them to Herne Bay has been successful in the next few weeks. He added:

“We are going to have a huge range of aircraft regardless. We will have a de Havilland Vampire, display teams, and even a Chinook helicopter.”
